Barron Hanson speaks with Captain Paul Hannigan, Commanding Officer of HMAS Albatross, about the base’s history, its role in the community, and why this remarkable piece of Australian defence history deserves a much bigger place in Nowra’s story.
Captain Paul Hannigan has built a distinguished naval aviation career spanning more than four decades. Originally from Scotland, he graduated from Napier Polytechnic in Edinburgh before entering Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, in 1989. He earned his Royal Navy pilot wings in 1991 and served for 17 years as a helicopter pilot, with deployments in Northern Ireland, the Former Yugoslavia and Iraq. In 2006, Paul emigrated to Australia to join the Royal Australian Navy. During the 2019–2020 South Coast bushfires, as Commanding Officer of 808 Squadron he led MRH90 Taipan helicopter operations supporting affected communities. Now appointed as Commanding Officer HMAS Albatross.
