OUR STORY

BUILDING A DISTRICT

Something special happens when a community decides its best days are ahead, not behind. That’s the moment we’re living in right now.

Beneath the surface, there’s always been something extraordinary here—authentic people, emerging artists, proud First Nations businesses, creative entrepreneurs, and a community that refuses to settle for “good enough.”

Nowra.org.au began with real people asking real questions: What if our CBD reflected who we truly are? What if our streets buzzed with the creative energy that’s always existed here, just waiting to be amplified? What if we stopped waiting for someone else to transform our town, and did it ourselves?

In early 2025, the Shoalhaven Business Chamber secured NSW Government funding to turn this vision into reality. But this isn’t just another grant program, it’s a movement. It’s about honouring our roots while reaching for something new. It’s about culture, emerging artists, bold entrepreneurs, and a community that welcomes everyone to come and be themselves.

We’re building a district where ART thrives, local EATS draw crowds, creative WORK flourishes, there’s always something to SEE, and visitors want to STAY. A place where diversity, creativity, and passion define who we are.

What we're changing

This is about more than economic development—it’s about cultural transformation. We’re proving that regional towns can lead, that community-driven change is the most powerful kind, and that Nowra’s refreshing charm comes from being unapologetically ourselves.

The challenges are real:

  • Limited evening economy 
  • Untapped potential of our arts and cultural scene
  • Lack of visibility and support for CBD businesses
  • Insufficient support for new creative ventures
  • Fragmented community with no unified voice to advocate for change

OUR APPROACH:

We’re tackling transformation from every angle, with authenticity at the core:

  • Supporting businesses to extend trading hours and try new ideas
  • Providing mentoring, resources, and grants for emerging ventures
  • Creating the Nowra Art Walk to celebrate local and First Nations artists
  • Building a collaborative network where everyone belongs
  • Amplifying the voices and stories that make Nowra unique
  • Hosting events and activations that reflect our diverse community

Project Goals | Our Ambitious Targets for 2025-2026

We’re not here for incremental change—we’re here to transform Nowra CBD. These are our measurable goals for the next 12 months, and we’re holding ourselves accountable to deliver.

GOAL 1: NOWRA 100

New Members

Current: 5 founding members

Target: 100 members by June 2026

What this means:

  • Businesses, property owners, entrepreneurs, creatives and community organisations united under one banner
  • A powerful collective voice advocating for CBD interests
  • Shared resources, cross-promotion, and collaborative marketing
  • Regular networking events and business development workshops

Why it matters:

Strength in numbers. When 100 businesses speak with one voice, councils listen, customers notice, and change happens faster.

GOAL 2: ESTABLISH 10 NEW EVENING TRADING VENTURES

New Trading Ventures

Current: Limited evening economy

Target: 10 new businesses/extended hours by June 2026

What this means:

  • New cafes, bars, and restaurants with evening hours
  • Pop-up activations and cultural events after 5pm
  • Extended retail trading for key shopping periods
  • Creative spaces and studios open for evening browsing

Why it matters:

Evening economy = 40% of urban spending. When streets are alive after dark, everyone benefits—from retailers to restaurants to cultural venues.

GOAL 3: COMPLETE THE NOWRA ART WALK

What this means:

  • Commissioned works from local and regional artists
  • Guided walking tours and QR-coded artist information
  • School engagement program connecting students with artists

Why it matters:

Public art transforms spaces into places. The Art Walk will give people a reason to explore, linger, and return—turning our CBD into a destination.

GOAL 4: PROVIDE MENTORING

Mentoring Opportunities

What this means:

  • One-on-one business mentoring for emerging ventures
  • Small grants for shop activation and improvement
  • Workshops on evening trading, marketing, and customer experience
  • Connection to broader support networks and resources

Why it matters:

Small businesses are the backbone of our CBD, but they shouldn’t have to figure everything out alone. We’re here to help them succeed.

GOAL 5: INCREASE FOOT TRAFFIC BY 40%

Target: 40% increase in evening foot traffic (6pm-10pm)

What this means:

  • More people dining, shopping, and exploring after work
  • Higher spending across all business categories
  • Safer, more vibrant streets with natural surveillance
  • Positive perception shift: Nowra is “happening”

Why it matters:

Foot traffic = sales = sustainability. This metric tells us if we’re truly changing behaviour and driving economic impact.

GOAL 6: ACHIEVE MEDIA & SOCIAL IMPACT

Social Followers

Target: 2,000 social followers | 30% engagement | 8 media features

What this means:

  • Active Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok presence
  • Monthly e-newsletters to growing database
  • Features in regional and metro media
  • User-generated content from visitors and locals

Why it matters:

In 2025, if you’re not online, you don’t exist. We’re building Nowra’s digital presence to match our real-world transformation.
